Holiday Sales 2024: How Your Promotions Will Automatically Appear On Chrome

Google just rolled out a new feature for the upcoming holiday season in 2024: US shoppers will see promotions directly in the Chrome address bar. Here’s what marketers need to know about the new update.

The holiday season has evolved. It’s no longer just about Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but also about the post-holiday period known as the fifth quarter or ‘Q5’ — the period in between Christmas and midway into January.

To maximise the impact of the excitement of double-digit sale days and the new year resolutions, Google has unrolled a new update this year. Starting this holiday season, your promotions will automatically appear in the Chrome address bar for US shoppers.

Certain promotions can be shown to shoppers while they use the Chrome desktop browser in two locations:

  • On the Chrome New Tab page, as part of a new experience showing recent activity across the web. This will bring users back to your site to finish a purchase.
  • In the Chrome address bar, while a shopper is browsing your website. This helps shoppers easily locate the best deals on your website.

How It Works

When US shoppers using Chrome desktop are browsing your website, they’ll see your Merchant Center promotions directly in the address bar. This strategic placement ensures maximum visibility and drives more engagement with your deals.

How to take control of your promotions?

If you don’t want a specific promotion to show up in the Chrome address bar, go to “Edit the promotion” section in Merchant Center, and unselect the “Chrome” option. If you don’t want any promotions to show, you can also opt out.

Eligibility

To be eligible to show on the Chrome desktop browser, promotions must:

  • Be targeted to show organically in the US
  • Be percent off or money off
  • Have a coupon code that can be applied without additional conditions and requirements

If a promotion is eligible, it automatically appears on the Chrome address bar and the Chrome New Tab page.

How To Opt Out

If you don’t want any promotions from your Merchant Center account to show in the Chrome address bar or the New Tab page, you can opt out using this form. Google will process the request within 5 business days. The user requesting an opt-out must be an administrator of the Merchant Center account, or else the request can’t be processed.

For businesses that prefer not to participate in this feature altogether, you can opt out of Chrome promotions entirely.
